Materials: White oak, sitka spruce, steel, hickory veneered Europly, sitka spruce, poplar

This project was unique because of the diversity of millwork pieces required. The most unique part of this project was the design and fabrication of the modular wall storage system which completely surrounded the interior space. The wine display boxes and shelving are all interlocking modular units to be set up in various configurations. The wall panels were cut with a CNC router.

The point of sale counter was fabricated with white oak to 4” thick and 16’ long counter top featuring a folded mitre at the end. A pair of diagonal slatted barn doors were also fabricated using poplar and finished with paint.

The steel / white oak display carts sitka spruce. two display tables fabricated from sitka spruce and steel. The two larger tasting tables sitka spruce and steel – all tables are mobile. A satin clear clear finish was applied to the point of sale counter and table tops.

Finding the right plywood was a challenge because the customer wanted a specific look. Ultimately, a europly was selected for the wall panels. Fabricating the interlocking fitted boxed and installation in an untrue historic building were additional challenges.

Windy Films – Industrial Inspired Kitchen

Designer: Grain

Materials: Walnut, steel, concrete

Location: East Boston, MA

Recently, Windy Films moved into a 4,000 square foot space in the Shipyard that was once an old fire station. They needed a kitchen that would work within their offices, and also make their clients feel comfortable to hang out in while watching the crew through the window shooting on the studio floor.

To keep with the industrial vibe of the space and the location, we integrated raw materials such as steel, concrete, and wood – a clean and simple, contemporary design. We created lots of charcoal concrete counter space, flat panel walnut cabinets, and open shelves for top units, all built at Grain Wood Shop.

The top shelves are constructed with steel brackets with a satin polyurethane finish. The steel is rough with exposed welds, with walnut end grain pushed into the open tube stock, topped with 1″ walnut with a satin varnish finish that will keep the woodwork protected from spills and other accidents in the kitchen. The shelves span the entire width of the kitchen from the refrigerator to the wall.

Materials: Solid walnut, walnut ply, P-Lam cabinets and countertops, Chemetal, steel, glass and mirrors

Location: Natick, MA

This project was unique because the design incorporated multi media including various woods, metals, glass, and mirrors to provide the right ambiance. The massive U shaped bar top was fabricated in sections using solid walnut and ply and measured over 50 linear feet once completed. The walnut back bar display cabinets featured chemetal chrome accents , mirrors inside walnut cabinets. To create the liquor display, Grain worked with a local metal fabricator to create chrome plated shelving.

An arch from the bar area was created to separate the dining room from the bar, this was a mirror and walnut arch that covered an expansion gap. LED’s were installed to have some backlighting.
