Woodworking Capabilities

Our 8,000 sq. ft. facility is located in the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina and includes engineering, CNC routing capabilities, millwork machine equipment and a separate finishing department. Our craftspeople have decades of experience and come from various backgrounds in design, fine woodworking, and the trades.

Pre-ConstructionGrain works with architects and contractors providing consulting service, detailing and engineering assistance at the front end of a project.  Beginning with AutoCAD, shop drawings, samples and mock-ups ensure the right product is fabricated to your specifications.

Engineering – Grain’s in-house engineering staff uses Autodesk Fusion 360, the next generation product innovation platform for all millwork projects. This allows us to unify design, engineering and manufacturing into a single platform. In addition, collaboration and 3D modeling are easily done with the software.

Value engineering is a part of every project. We provide a range of options for customers to consider regarding design, materials selection and cost. Fabricating prototypes and mock-ups is the norm for more complex or large projects.

CNC Machining Grain has extensive CAD and CNC capabilities for machining flat materials of all types up to 5′ x 12′. We specialize in custom laid up plywoods and other wood composite materials such as MDF, plywood and laminates, as well as solid wood, plastics (Phenolic, HDPE, Acrylic, Delrin, etc), non-ferrous metals and similar sheet materials.

We assist with prototyping a new product to handling production runs of all sizes. Some of our customers use Grain as their CNC machine shop for architectural millwork because of convenience and quick turn-around.

Finishing –  Our customers appreciate how a high quality finish can bring out the best in millwork pieces. Grain’s finishing department applies a wide variety of finishes in specified thickness, colors and sheen which can range from flat to gloss. The finishing room is equipped with a variable speed filtration system which allows for a professional and consistent finish.

Installation – Quality installation is where the millwork project comes together. We use experienced in-house and contracted installers. Grain’s installers coordinate the installation with general contractors and other trades, ensuring that millwork is integrated into the rest of the project and professionally completed according to schedule.

Project Management – All projects are managed by project managers with years of experience. We work closely with the architect and GC to deliver the millwork package according to job specifications and schedule. Our team is realistic and understands changes in any planned project will occur. Change orders will be needed, unexpected issues will arise and the schedule may change. Grain is accommodating to do what it takes to complete the project.

Cabinets & Countertops – Grain fabricates quality custom cabinets and casework for commercial, residential and even nautical interiors.  Most cabinets we build, feature all plywood construction using traditional joinery methods and include high quality hardware and maple dovetail drawers. CNC machining allows us to complete jobs with a quick turn-around. We also fabricate solid surface, wood and plastic laminate countertops.

Event Millwork Support – We work closely with Event support companies to fabricate specialty pieces to be displayed at conventions, marketing or special events. These pieces are custom made to promote the brand awareness.
